Rivals face ethics charges-Complaints against Sink, McCollum allege unauthorized use of state planes

Attorney General Bill McCollum and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, Republican and Democratic rivals respectively in the 2010 race for governor, are now the targets of ethics complaints charging that they used state airplanes for personal travel. Kenneth Quinnell, a member of the Leon County Democratic Executive Committee, filed a complaint Tuesday against McCollum charging that some of his flights on state aircraft in the past few years were a, "misuse of his public position." The complaint mirrors one filed June 29 against Sink by Jose Blas Lorenzo, an attorney for the state Department of Education. (Continue Reading...)

Anti-tax tea parties planned for July 2

Anti-tax tea party groups from the Treasure Coast plan to head to Palm Beach County on Thursday to protest President Barack Obama’s proposed health-care reform. Rallies aimed at the Affordable Health Choices Act are expected to start around 11 a.m. outside the West Palm Beach office of U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., the Mangonia Park office of U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, and the Boca Raton office of U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton. About 50 Treasure Coast Tea Party members have signed up to join with the South Florida Tea Party chapter for the statewide effort aimed at asking lawmakers from Florida to oppose what they say is a federal government takeover of the nation’s health care system. Poll: Rubio still far behind Crist – but closing gap

Gov. Charlie Crist's lead in the Republican U.S. Senate race is still better than 2-1, but challenger Marco Rubio showed slight progress in a new statewide poll released on Monday. "There's still such a long way to go, but we think that as more voters learn more about Marco Rubio's idea-driven brand of conservatism, the more we will be able to close the gap," said Alex Burgos, a campaign spokesman for the former state House speaker. The Mason-Dixon Florida Poll, conducted last week among 625 registered voters, indicated 51-percent support for Crist — compared to 23 percent for Rubio. But that was largely a factor of Crist being far better known statewide than the former West Miami legislator. (Continue Reading...)
